English ramblings. [Aug. 4th, 2004|12:35 pm]
No One Really
Continued from a discussion of the overuse of the construction "_____ of _____" in fantasy novels. Discuss, and for extra credit, point out my hypocrisy.

nor is hiding: The song is called "The Edge of Forever", which makes their live album title make even more sense, although this song is not actually on their live album.
Restless Warrior: How ironic!
nor is hiding: Don't you think?
[...]
nor is hiding: Although, this also fits in with our Fantasy English bashing.
nor is hiding: Although I'm not sure you could consider "Forever" to be an adjective. I guess it is.
Restless Warrior: "Forever's Edge"?
nor is hiding: Yes!
nor is hiding: And really, Symphony X does that a LOT too.
Restless Warrior: It doesn't have to be. "Crown of Swords" has no adjectives...
nor is hiding: Consider the following lyric, which I must first find.
Restless Warrior: "The henge of stone calls out my name"?
nor is hiding:
"As armies fall from the edge of the sky
The Prince of truth, now the bringer of war
The day of wrath
Banish all kings from the face of the land"
nor is hiding: I am not making this up.
Restless Warrior: Wonderful.
nor is hiding: I thought you might be impressed.
nor is hiding: We should perhaps give them a class.
nor is hiding: 19 times in one song. Wow.
Restless Warrior: "of", definition #1 at m-w.com:
Restless Warrior: "used as a function word to indicate a point of reckoning"
Restless Warrior: What's wrong with this?
nor is hiding: Har~
Restless Warrior: They should just add a definition 13: "like, 'of' means 'of', man!"
nor is hiding: used as a function word to indicate a point used as a function word to indicate a point of reckoning reckoning
Restless Warrior: Oww...
nor is hiding: Doh, there's another one~
nor is hiding: used as a function word to indicate a point used as a function word to indicate a point used as a function word to indicate a point used as a function word to indicate a point of reckoning reckoning reckoning reckoning
nor is hiding: It doesn't stop!
Restless Warrior: Is that even a well formed sentence?
nor is hiding: I think I need a period.
Restless Warrior: And an "It is" prefix.
nor is hiding: Yeah, that's probably all that's wrong with that sentence.
[...]
Restless Warrior: Anyway, I like my "triple is" sentence better.
[...]
Restless Warrior: Discovering what the secret of what life is is is not as easy as you would think.
Restless Warrior: I think that was it.
nor is hiding: Oooo that is impressive.
