No One Really
|||||me humming that passage I was talking about. o_O||]|
Stolen from astralblue
Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.
I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.
astralblue asked me:
1. So what's your favorite pastime these days?
Seriously, I've been working a lot. I stopped playing WoW. Mostly, I like to play random games, and analyze how they work/what makes them fun/what are the optimal strategies, etc.
I'm very much enjoying playing Go when I can, but I am absolutely pathetic at it. I rarely have the time to sit down and play through an entire game, though. I do play some fast Go against the computer sometimes.
Other than that... really, sleeping is nice.
2. What is the color that best summarizes your personality, and why?
I would love to be able to say a rich, dark blue. Calming, placid, comforting. Unfortunately, I probably end up being a little too frenetic for that most of the time. Let's go with light green, for inexperienced and brash. =)
3. Suppose you were given a magical chance to adopt a foreign culture as your second nature, without effort. Which country would you pick, and why?
Japan. I might pick China, but I don't know enough, and haven't educated myself yet.
At first it was because of video games and anime. But the more I learn about their culture, writing, and history, the more intrigued I get. I've taken a couple of Japanese literature (in translation) courses, and a lot of the writing and history is fascinating in a way that American history is not. (This from a person who generally hates studying history)
Don't get me wrong. I still like video games and anime.
4. Which musical instrument do you play the best?
Voice, by far. My keyboard skill is pathetic, and I don't know how much I could even pick out on a viola at this point. My voice has always been my best instrument though, although even that is a little rusty at this point. (I try to sing along with some more difficult songs, and I hear myself missing slightly all over. I'm thinking right now of Dream Theater's "In The Presence of Enemies part 2", if you know it.)
5. Last but not least, when are you coming back to NorCal?!?!! ;___;
As soon as possible. ;_;
The current plan is to finish undergrad here, and then try to go to Stanford for graduate school... there's a person who is doing interesting (to me) work in generic game-playing. However, if I don't go to California for grad school, I plan to move back there after I get my Ph. D.
Right now, given the rate at which I am going through school, I predict 2-3 years. Toz (my g/f) also needs to finish her undergrad before any moving takes place.
tidesong asked me:
1. If you won a million dollars, and it had to be spent in 24 hours, except it could not be spent on yourself, what would you do with it? Anything not spent after 24 hours will just go *poof*.
My answers to these sorts of things are unfortunately boring, but here goes:
House for my parents, car for my parents, large donation to the EFF (probably about half of it), large videogame tournament for my friends (I haven't run one of those in a few months, actually...) pay for Toz's college (if that's not cheating), and the rest on basically random things to benefit my friends.
2. Similarily, if you won a million dollars, and it had to be spent in 24 hours and it could ONLY be spent on yourself, what would you do with it?
Similar sorts of things. House, car, pay for tuition for 2 years (if that's not cheating), some arcade machines (notably a DDR supernova upgrade, a DanceManiax machine, and a IIDX machine), some fitness equipment, a big party at the new place, a new computer for use on some of my AI projects, and then basically furnishing the new place (furniture, tv/games, etc)
Pretty boring, really. Sorry for the lack of deep insights. =(
3. Since you asked me, and I'm curious as to what your answer would be, if there were one person from the old BBS days that you could get back in touch with, who would it be, if any, and why? And a bonus twist: which people from old BBS days have you seen anytime recently? (Say, last 5 years.)
I'd like to hear what happened to Spiritual Warrior. There are maybe others.
Um, 5 years is a gigantic window. Let's see: Bob (the handle), Darkchild, Dystopia, Fish, Krumpet, Marius Pontmercy, Minox, North Star, Star Eater (although he would certainly object to the name now...), Woodstock, Zifnab, Hanger 18, Kitty Kat Kitana, (whose future BBS handles I don't remember, and she'll probably kill me if she notices I used that one >_<) ... I think I've seen Tofu and Roger Wilco in the past 5 years, but unfortunately that's a stretch, Restless Warrior (who probably isn't Old School), Prince Ali, and there are others but I don't remember what their handles were...
4. What do you consider to be the most difficult work you've successfully learned for voice, or viola, or whatever...take your pick.
My solo voice and viola work mostly ended in high school, unfortunately. The most difficult piece was in Madison Symphony Choir, though, and it was Poulenc's Stabat Mater. For Viola, it was probably Telemann's Concerto in G (although I only learned movements 1 and 2). Here's the best video of the 2nd movement I can find
5. What is your degree going to be in, and what kind of a job are you hoping to get after graduation?
Computer Science. I want to probably be a professor, which unfortunately means I have to go for the Ph. D. Maybe I'll be done by 40. If I live that long. ;-)
funnybookqueen asked me:
1) Since you are anti-Suikoden 5 for fest, what would you like to play??
My current preferences are Eternal Sonata or Blue Dragon for the 360. I think this makes things somewhat difficult for fest, however. I accept, however, that it is likely to be Suiko 5.
2) What is your favorite book and why?
It's hard to say. I think I would have to say Musashi, by Eiji Yoshikawa, because the story is so epic, and the story is Japanese, which means that things are told a different way, which makes it very interesting to me.
3)If you had to give up one of your five senses, which would it be and why?
Smell, by process of elimination:
Hearing is most important to me
Seeing is also important to me
I like tasting things
I like touching things
Smelling is nice, but probably least important.
4)Would you rather have a scandal named after you or a disease named after you and why?
Scandal. Usually diseases are only named after you if you're going to die from it. ;-)
5)Would you rather never be able to say the word love or never be able to kiss and why??
Say love. I think there are plenty of other ways to express love for someone else, even if you're not using the word. (And I could still write it! You never said I couldn't neeeeener. ;-) )
